The Rector according to the Statute

"The Rector represents the University for all legal purposes and supervises all its activities [...] he is responsible for pursuing the University's aims in accordance with quality criteria, in compliance with the principles of effectiveness, efficiency, transparency and promotion of merit [...] guarantees respect for the principles of autonomy of the University, freedom of teaching and research, and the rights of staff and students [...] guarantees compliance with the law, the Statute and the regulations [...] He convenes and chairs the Academic Senate and the Board of administration [...] he issues the Statute and the University regulations, including the internal regulations of each structure" (Art. 9 of the University Statute)

Curriculum Prof. Paolo Martelli

Paolo Martelli, born in Parma on 25 April 1960, graduated in Veterinary Medicine with honours from the University of Parma in 1984. Licensed to practice as a veterinary surgeon (1984), he joined the Order of Veterinary Surgeons of the province of Parma in November 1984. Recruited by the University of Parma as a Graduate Technician in 1988, he became a Researcher in 1992 and Associate Professor in 1998. Since December 2002, he has been a full professor for the S.S.D. VET/08 - Veterinary Medical Clinic and belongs to the Department of Veterinary Science.

Paolo Martelli is a Diplomate European Specialist (EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Porcine Health Management) and founding father of the European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM). 

He currently has teaching responsibility for the Veterinary Medical Clinic courses in the Single-Cycle Degree Course in Veterinary Medicine.

The research activity, dedicated to the study of animal diseases in intensive farming (population medicine) with particular reference to clinical and experimental immunological aspects, is evidenced by more than 200 products published in national and international journals. Prof. Martelli exceeded the threshold values of the indicators for aspiring Commissioners of the ASN 2016 and 2018.

Among the numerous internal positions he has held, he was Director of the Department of Animal Health (2003 - 2008), Coordinator of the Veterinary Medical Clinic Section (2009 - 2012), Medical Director of the University Veterinary Hospital (2005 - 2008 and 2011 - 2012), member of the University Evaluation Committee (2005-2010) and Vice Rector with responsibility for Construction (2010 - 2013).

He held the position of Deputy Rector of the University of Parma for the six-year period 2017-2023.

He was Coordinator of the PhD course in Animal Health (from XXV cycle to the confluence with the PhD course in Veterinary Medical Sciences) and of the PhD course in Veterinary Medical Sciences (from XXXI cycle to XXXII cycle). From 2008 to 2017 he was a member of the Scientific Committee of Area 107 - Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, holding the position of President and, as such, a member of the University Commission for Scientific Research.

He has been President of National Scientific Societies, expert for the Ministry of Agriculture, member of working groups for EFSA, promoter of national and international congresses and president of scientific committees of international congresses. He is a member of the Board of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) and President of ECPHM (2016-2019).

He has been an invited speaker at more than 400 national and international meetings, conferences and seminars organised by Scientific Societies, Universities and Animal Health Agencies.
